The iPhone 3GS is identical to the iPhone 3G in terms of size and appearance. It weighs a little more (one ounce), but that is nothing major. If you put the two phones side by side you would not be able to tell them apart while in sleep mode. However, once you wake the phones up you do begin to see the difference. The new iPhone 3GS has a screen that looks crisper; the images seem sharper and the display a little more vivid. This is mostly due to the increased graphics power brought on by the PowerVR SGX Graphics chip, which has support for OpenGL ES 2.0.

Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Smartphone
The PowerVR SGX is not the only new thing under the hood, though; Apple has thrown in a faster CPU running at 600MHz Vs the old 3G speed of 412MHz, while the memory in the phone has been doubled (256MB vs 128MB).

 Apple iPhone 3G S
The additional speed, memory and graphics processing means more complex applications, faster video response and of course better gaming.
Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Smartphone
On the OS side of the house Apple has made some nice improvements. They have added in voice control, Multi-Media Messaging, tethering, a digital compass, improved video support, improved security, cut, copy and paste, video recording, geo-tagging (for photographs) and of course a landscape keyboard for texting and e-mail to list a few. But these are mostly surface additions; Apple has also fixed about 45 security issues with the iPhone OS that have been an ongoing concern

The competition
If not the iPhone 4, can I settle for the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G I've already got?
You can and, for the most part, you'll be fine, as you'll be getting the new iOS 4 update, for free on 21 June, 3 days before the official iPhone 4 launch. If you've got the iPhone 3G, then you'll still get the OS update but not all the features will work. That said, an upgrade will get you a new camera, new video, a faster device, a tougher design, that gyro for gaming and the video camera for FaceTime (yawn).

What are the alternative smartphones on the market to the iPhone 4?

There are plenty. From HTC we would recommend you check out the HTC Desire, the Nexus One, and possibly the HTC Legend. From Motorola the Motorola Milestone, and the just-about-to-be-released Motorola Milestone XT720. From Nokia, the N900. From Samsung, possibly the Galaxy S. And, if you're willing to wait another 6 months, a plethora of yet-to-be-confirmed Windows Phone 7 handsets.

I've just bought an iPad, should I bother with the iPhone 4?

That's the toughest one yet. You've clearly found enough reasons to buy a device that you probably didn't need, but at least this one will allow you to talk with and see your loved ones, making it, possibly, easier to justify.

If you do, all you've got to worry about is that your mate with an Android handset will be calling you fanboy for the rest of your days. Then again you could just slap him for trying to dictate what phone you use and tell him it's all about Open Source (your choice that is).

Apple wins ban on Samsung Galaxy Tab sales in Germany

Samsung has been banned from selling its Galaxy Tab tablet computers in Germany until at least 9 September following a successful injunction claim by Apple. The decision leaves the South Korean electronics giant in limbo during the giant IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin next week.

A German court said on Thursday it would deliver its ruling on that date, two days after the end of IFA, after hearing arguments from Samsung and iPad maker Apple, which had argued that the Galaxy Tabs "slavishly" copied its design.

Samsung had asked for a decision before IFA. In his response, the judge said there were "overarching similarities" between Samsung's Galaxy Tabs, which run Google's Android operating system, and Apple's iPad.

It was not clear at the time of publication whether the terms of the injunction prohibit Samsung from displaying the Galaxy Tab at IFA.

Earlier this week Apple also won an injuction against Samsung's Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and Ace smartphones, prohibiting their import into Europe through the Netherlands – Samsung's principal import point for the EU. Although the Korean company could get around that injunction by importing into a different country, it would have to reorganise its logistics system to cope with it.

Such methods have been used by companies including Sony to get around similar injunctions.

But the decision in Germany did not all go Apple's way, as the injunction was not enforced by the German court against Samsung throughout Europe.

Florian Müller, who follows the patent battles between technology companies closely, provided an English translation of the court ruling on his Fosspatents blog, which includes a passage noting that "the… design presented by Apple has to be considered valid and is infringed by Samsung. That said, the court reaffirmed doubts about having cross-border jurisdiction over a company domiciled outside the European Union with respect to Europe-wide injunctions. Therefore, the court has indicated that, after the consultation that took place before the hearing, it tends to uphold the preliminary injunction against Samsung Germany to its full extent and to lift it with respect to Samsung's Korean parent company with respect to markets outside of the Federal Republic of Germany."

Richard Windsor, an analyst at stockbrokers Nomura, observed: "The problem Samsung has here is precedent. If it loses the court ruling on 9 September, Apple will be able to take that ruling and apply for a ban in other EU countries as the design rights that Apple has on this are enforceable throughout the EU."

Patent lawsuits are becoming increasingly common between wireless industry players, as established companies seek to protect their markets from newcomers such as Google. Google agreed last week to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn, largely for its vast portfolio of mobile patents. It will be the company's largest-ever acquisition.

Windsor added: "While this is a short-term negative for Samsung, once it has access to the MMI [Motorola] patents via the Google acquisition, we think it should be in a much better position to fight back against Apple. By any stretch of the imagination, Samsung's [present] intellectual property position is weak, giving it little with which to fight back against the predations of Apple."

The battle over the Galaxy Tab in Germany is one of 19 lawsuits going on between Apple and Samsung in 12 courts in 9 countries on 4 continents, says Müller: those include the US, where Apple claims infringement of a number of patents relating to its iPhone and iPad.
