Gigabyte S1080 tablet has an Intel Atom N570 1.66GHz dual core, 2GB RAM, SD card slot, and a 320GB hard drive. Such as connectivity, has 802.11 b / g / n WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, one USB 3.0 port, Bluetooth 3.0, and D-Sub outputs.

Design and construction

With its vital stats of 270 x 173 x 14.94 mm and weight of 895 grams, the Gigabyte S1080 can forget about its plans of joining a tablet beauty pageant. It doesn’t have the sexy, slim and streamlined profile we commonly see among other available tablets like the iPad or the HTC Flyer.

The Gigabyte S1080 has boxy kind of design that reminds you of the box-type cars of the 80s. It has rounded edges though to soften up its appearance a bit but makes it look business-like and work-related. The finish of the Gigabyte S1080 is done in matte black and is able to resist fingerprints to a certain extent.

Unfortunately, the Gigabyte S1080 also has design boo-boos such as the placement of its fan and heat vent along with its constructions that left the screws of the device exposed.

Under the hood

The Gigabyte S1080 is capable indeed if you take a look at the components that lurk under its hood. It’s got a dual core Intel Atom N570 processor running at 1.66GHz and packs 2GB of DDR3 RAM that works in tandem with the processor.

No dedicated GPU can be found on the Gigabyte S1080 but its massive 5400rpm 320GB hard drive is more than enough to handle most of your data-safekeeping needs. Despite the large storage space, it still packs an SD card slot for memory expansion should the 320GB prove insufficient.

The display

The Gigabyte S1080 sports an LED-backlit 10.1-inch capacitive multi-touch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. In addition to that, its retail package comes with an included matte screen protector for the display of the tablet for reduced glare when using the device outdoors or under direct sunlight.

The features set of the Gigabyte S1080 is something that it should be proud of though. Aside from the usual integrated speakers, built-in microphone, Bluetooth 3.0 support, 1.3-megapixel webcam, 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, SD card reader, RJ45 port and USB 2.0 port, it also comes with a USB 3.0 port.

Yes folks, you heard right. USB 3.0, for real. Just when a USB 3.0 port is rare enough that it can only be found in high-end laptops, we see the Gigabyte S1080 already packing one. This is something that makes it stand out from the multitude of tablets we have to choose from today.

For its operating system, the Gigabyte S1080 runs Windows 7 Home Premium and does a pretty decent job of doing so. More than a few people though would have difficulties in transitioning to a touch-based Windows operating system because of the lack of right-click and contextual menus in the Gigabyte S1080. However, like mentioned earlier, the processor – ram combination manage to handle Windows 7 Home Premium pretty well. No complaints here.

Battery life

The Gigabyte S1080 packs a 4000 mAh Lithium-Polymer power pack and real world tests show that the battery can supply juice to the Gigabyte S1080 for up to 5 hours of usage on a single charge before it gets all the juice squeezed out. A bit disappointing if you ask me so never leave home without the device’s charger is all I can say.

The bottom line

It’s hard comparing the Gigabyte S1080 to other currently available tablets today because of its different attributes. However, taking a look at device gives off the impression that it is very capable notwithstanding the less-than-aesthetically pleasing looks. At $650 US, people might probably go for a full-sized notebook that packs a better feature set and has a lot more power than the Gigabyte S1080.
